Kia Ora whānau rāua tamariki,

What a fabulous (if a little bit cold) day we had today with Hapu 19 kicking off the Cycle Safety Road Ride. It was a great opportunity to put all the skills we have been learning into action. Phil and Jeanette have built the confidence and road rule knowledge of our tamariki in the last week and this was evident today.

Thanks to those of you who attended the Kahurangi Assembly - our tamariki did a great job, and we love having them showcase their learning - from the beautiful waiata they sing to the range of work they were able to share. They should all be very proud.

Hapu 18 are set to take part in their road ride tomorrow. We are still looking for some parents to support us with this. It is essential we have the numbers to allow us to safely take part in the ride. Please email Karl on kradford@whakarongo.school.nz if you are able to assist with this. Thank you to those of you who have offered to help for Hapu 20 - we look forward to seeing you Wednesday!

This week Sport Manawatu will be hosting a Cycle Safety meeting held in the Kahurangi POD from 6:30-7:30pm. It is a chance to talk to Phil about how to keep your tamariki safe on the roads. It is a fabulous programme and I know being a part of the programme has given the pouako support in teaching our own children important bike safety skills. If you would like to take part in this programme, please email kradford@whakarongo.school.nz to let him know you intend to attend the meeting.

On Friday the 1st of June we will be having a Teacher’s Only Day. School will be closed on this day so the staff can carry out some Professional Development. Please make sure you have made arrangements for your child’s care. Monday 4th June school will also be closed for Queen’s Birthday Weekend. We will see our learners back energised and ready to go on Tuesday morning!

A reminder that Cross Country will be held on Friday 8th June. We are still training hard and looking forward to showing how much we have improved our running and fitness! With students bringing alternative clothing / footwear in for training can we remind everybody of the importance of naming these and ensuring they take home the right shoes. The postponement day, should weather become an issue, will be on Thursday, June 21st.

On the subject of clothing, during these colder and wetter months we do still like to have our tamariki out and about as much as possible. We ask those students who like to get out on the fields to bring a spare change of clothes to ensure they don’t end up wet and uncomfortable for the afternoon sessions.
Homework continues to be the Chapter Chat independent tasks. We are loving seeing the creative work that or tamariki are bringing in!

That time of the year...

Kia Ora Koutou,

Just a note as it appears that it is that time of year again when unwanted friends like to make a home in our hair. If you notice your tamariki scratching, please take the time to check their heads for lice and treat appropriately.

Cycle Skills Update

Kia Ora Koutou,

Thankfully the weather held off for us today and we were able to complete the last of our in-school cycle skills sessions. It has been wonderful to see the improvement of our tamariki in terms of road rule knowledge as well as confidence on their bikes.

We are looking forward to putting these skills into action with our road ride. The road rides have been rescheduled for the following times:
Monday 1pm-3pm - Hapu 19 (Pou Bec's Class)
Tuesday 1pm-3pm - Hapu 18 (Pou Karl's Class)
Wednesday 1pm - 3pm - Hapu 20 (Pou Jo's Class)

If you wish for your child not to take part in the road ride, please email your child's pouako (teacher) directly. We are still requiring parent help for these rides - please email your child's homeroom teacher if you are able to assist with this - your support is greatly appreciated and we couldn't do this without you.

Sport Manawatu Parent Meeting - Sport Manawatu are offering parents the chance to come in for a parent evening about how to keep your child safe on the roads. We encourage all parents to attend - they are a fantastic and extremely knowledgable organisation. This will take place on Wednesday 30th May, 6:30-7:30 pm in the Kahurangi POD. Those interested in attending please email kradford@whakarongo.school.nz to confirm attendance.

Cycle Skills - Road Ride

Kia ora parents and whānau,

This week is our cycle skills safety programme. Each pouako take out a group each day for different aspects of the programme, and on Thursday each group will have their road ride.

We NEED parent assistance for this to go ahead. Each group will need at least 2 parents to assist at the following times (alongside the pouako and the cycling instructors). At present we have had no parental offers of help.

If you are able to help at anytime during the day - please let us know.

PLEASE LET US KNOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IF YOU ARE ABLE TO ASSIST WITH THIS.

Thanks so much for your support.

Kia Ora whānau rāua tamariki,

It was fabulous to start the week with loads of weekend highlights - Disco chats, successful soccer tournaments and all the other fun things that happened for our tamariki. Sounds like a fabulous weekend for all!

This week is Cycle Skills week. This is an important part of our programme aimed at keeping our students safe on the roads. This morning we had a lot of questions about the week so please read below, and the attached file, for important information.

  • Students will be riding their bikes at school on Tuesday and Wednesday, and have their road ride on Thursday.
  • Please make sure they have their bike and helmet with them EACH DAY. If transporting the bike to and from school is an issue, we will provide a space for students to leave their bikes in the pod overnight.
  • Please make sure your child’s helmet is fitting correctly (especially for those who did not bring their helmets in today). Information on how to correctly fit a helmet is attached below.
  • Girls - please wear a low ponytail as high ponytails will not make your helmet fit correctly. Please also remove any headbands before riding.
  • You are required to wear covered shoes.
  • Come prepared to ride - even if the weather is not looking ideal in the morning. Please take the time to read over this notice with your child and contact your homeroom teacher if your child is a complete beginner, does not have a bike or does not wish to participate in the road ride.

Thanks to those of you who have supplied material for our students to make their food wraps. We are hoping to make a start on these later in the week so if your child would like to choose their own fabric there is still time! Remember to make sure it is 100% cotton, 30 x 40 cm.

This week is the Year 5 / 6 parent meeting. This will be held in Kahurangi POD at 6:30 pm and is a chance for parents to hear a bit more about our programme - in particular how we are incorporating STEM into our Conceptual Curriculum. We would love to see you there!

Orders for the PTA Cheeseburger lunch on May 23rd are available online at www.mykindo.co.nz. There will be no order slips going home this time.

Kahurangi will be hosting assembly this week. We would love for our whānau to come and celebrate our learning with us. We aim to start at 2:15pm.

On Friday the 1st of June we will be having a Teachers Only Day. School will be closed on this day so the staff can carry out some Professional Development. Please make sure you have made arrangements for your child’s care. Monday 4th June school will also be closed for Queens Birthday Weekend.

A reminder that Cross Country will be held on Friday 8th June. We are still training hard and looking forward to showing how much we have improved our running and fitness!

Kia Ora whānau rāua tamariki,

We’re all set for a busy few weeks so here are the highlights!

We wish our Super 10 Rugby players all the best in their tournament held at Coley Street in Foxton tomorrow. We are sure they will have a fabulous day! Parents are welcome to go and support our team.

Waiata for the Kapa Haka Rōpu Teina group has been added to the Kahurangi blog to practice at home . Please encourage your tamariki to become familiar and confident with these and give them the opportunity to ‘perform’ for you at home.

On Wednesday we will be making a start on our food wraps. Just a reminder that we are asking students to bring in a piece of 100% cotton fabric (30cm by 40cm) to use for this project. If you are unable to supply a piece of material, please contact your child’s pouako so we can organise additional material.

Orders for the PTA Cheeseburger lunch on May 23rd are available online at www.mykindo.co.nz. There will be no order slips going home this time.

Homework will continue to be exploring their independent Chapter Chat tasks. In addition to this we asked our students to upload their Whakarongo Kid goals onto Seesaw today. Please take the time to look at these together and support your tamariki in reflecting on their learning habits.

Cross Country - We are looking forward to Cross Country which will be held on Friday 8th June. Our students are training extremely hard and displaying loads of perseverance in, and positive attitudes towards their training. Please find all additional information in the attached newsletter.

Disco - This will be held on Friday from 7:30 - 9pm. We look forward to seeing our tamariki outside of school and getting their groove on :) Please find additional information in the newsletter.

Cycle Skills - Our Cycles in Schools programme will take place in week 4. Students are asked to bring bikes to participate in this programme. Helmets are mandatory. Please take the time to read over this notice with your child and contact your homeroom teacher if your child is a complete beginner, does not have a bike or does not wish to participate in the road ride.

Science Fair - Due to the interest we have had from students wanting to participate in the Science Fair this year, we will be holding an ‘in-school’ competition before nominating projects to represent our students at the Manawatu Science and Technology Fair. We have attached an updated newsletter below. Please note that if your child wishes to participate you will need to email rplank@whakarongo.school.nz by tomorrow, Tuesday 15th of May.

Kia Ora whānau rāua tamariki,

What a fantastic start to term we had last week with students diving straight back into their conceptual curriculum rotations and exploring food through the ideas of ‘fitness, family and famine’. We look forward to moving into our second rotation this week so they can experience all aspects of our Food for Thought unit before making a choice on what concept they would like to further explore.

Kapa Haka will start tomorrow and be on every Tuesday afternoon. They will be learning waiata for their performance at Pae Tamariki (which will take place in Week 7) so please support your tamariki by having them perform for you at home! Those not participating in Kapa Haka groups will be exploring Māori culture through storytelling, weaving and traditional Māori games throughout the term.

Cross Country training has begun! Please support your child in remembering to bring suitable footwear and an optional change of clothes for training which will take place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Assembly will be on this week, presented by Aroha POD. All whānau welcome! A reminder that Kahurangi’s Assembly will be in week 4 this term. A reminder about school uniform. It is important for our students to wear the correct uniform daily. With the colder weather creeping in, students are welcome to wear non uniform jackets to and from school, but not during school time. Please ensure they have their correct school jersey or jacket for during the school day. School Uniform Guidelines have been emailed out. Please take the time to look over this with your tamariki.

Well done to all of those students who are taking part in the Peer Mediation programme. It was great to see so many students offer their own time to take on a leadership role within the school and add to the school culture. These students have completed their training and have started their duties today - we are sure this will be a great addition to our school and benefit our students immensely.

We have had a few queries in regards to Queens Birthday this year. Friday the 1st June is a Teachers Only Day, and Monday the 4th of June is the Queen’s Birthday public holiday. The school will be shut on Friday and will reopen for school on Tuesday 5th of June.

Homework focuses on the Chapter Chat creative tasks. We saw some fabulous work come in last week - and were also inspired by what we have seen other Kura posting on Twitter so please take the time to look at these fun tasks with your child.

Ngā Mihi,
Kahurangi Pouako
