Learning Celebration

Rātaka ō te wiki - Wiki Iwa

Kia Ora whānau rāua tamariki,

Firstly, a big thank you to all of those parents who were able to help out on Friday for our Food For Thought supermarket trip. Our tamariki had a fantastic experience and really got to put all their learning into practice in an authentic context. It was wonderful to see them hunting out healthy options to incorporate into a balanced diet. Check out seesaw for some fabulous pictures of them on their trip.

Learning plans have been sent home today - please ask your child for them if they have not already proudly presented them to you!

Great Kiwi Mathematics Competition - will be held on Friday 29th June. Students need to ensure that they have devices charged as the competition will be carried out digitally. Good luck to all those taking part!

Learning Celebrations will be held on Wednesday, 27th of June from 2-4pm. This is a change to the advertised time of 1:30-3pm. We invite all whānau in to share in our tamariki’s learning. We will start the celebration at 2pm with a small welcome (or paepae - the way we start off our days in Kahurangi). A few students have requested that they share some items they are particularly proud of and then you are welcome to look around our pod, share in your tamariki’s learning, and have a go with some of our favourite activities! We hope to see you there.

A union meeting will be held on Thursday 28th of June (this week). As all staff are members of the NZEI, we would appreciate if you are able to take your students home at the beginning of lunch to allow us to attend the meeting. If you are unable to do so, please let the school office know by tomorrow - Tuesday 26th June to allow us to ensure we have provisions in place to supervise those students staying at school. Email cdurham@whakarongo.school.nz. Aplus will be available from 12.30 on this day.

2018 Reading Challenge - Whakarongo School are taking part in the Hell’s Pizza Reading Challenge. This is a great initiative to encourage children to read more. To check it out go along to our library blog. Let the reading begin!

Assembly this week will be hosted by Tautoko pod. All whānau are welcome.

Homework continues to be the Chapter Chat independent tasks. These have been shared with our tamariki and are available on the blog.

Kia Ora whānau rāua tamariki,

Ka rawe to all of those tamariki who performed at Te Pae Tamariki on Friday (as well as those parents who supported them). It was such a fantastic way to celebrate all the hard work our students have been putting into practice this term. We were all buzzing after the performance! We are already talking about all the things we can bring into our performances for the rest of the year to continue to celebrate our unique and amazing culture - we can’t wait! We will be sharing a video later in the week so keep an eye out!

Food for Thought Trip - This week we will be focusing on our Food for Thought nutritional programme run by Food Stuffs. This programme is aimed at helping students make healthier food and lifestyle choices. We will have our very own ‘Food for Thought’ nutritionist who will take our students through entertaining and informative classroom sessions on Tuesday and Thursday, and an educational visit to Pak’n’Save on Friday. Each student will receive a lunch box and meal planner. We will be travelling to Pak’n’Save on Friday 22nd June by bus - $5.00 will be added to your child’s account to cover transport costs. We still require parental help for each hapu’s visit at the following times. At this stage we do not have enough support to be able to go ahead with the trips. Please email your tamariki’s pouako if you are available to help - and thank you to those who have offered to help :)

Inter School Cross Country

Unfortunately the Year 5/6 Inter School Cross Country has been cancelled tomorrow. The organisers have decided that it is just too dangerous in the wet with parking of cars etc. let alone having the children outside if it is wet while waiting for their races. Participants have been notified today.

Inter school Cross Country and Photos Update

Kia Ora Koutou,

Inter-school Cross Country. Unfortunately due to the weather the Inter-school Cross Country has been postponed until Thursday 14th June. All details remain the same other than they day. Fingers crossed for better weather for Thursday. We will update you as soon as we have any further updates.

Homeroom Photos.
A number of parents have requested Homeroom photos. In addition to POD photos, Homeroom photos will now also be available online from later today. These will cost $15.00 each and have to be purchased separately – they are not part of the Portrait / Photo Pack. They will be composite photos (made up of individual photos), as we don't have enough time to take 23 additional photos. Homeroom photos will also be available to order after photo day, using the access code your child will be given on the day to bring home. Please contact the school office if you require any further clarification.

Kia Ora whānau rāua tamariki,

We hope you all enjoyed the long weekend and managed to have some quality time with your whānau. It was great to hear of the adventures of our tamariki mixed in with some much needed quiet time. This week we have started developing wonderings for our Food for Thought inquiries. Check them out on Seesaw - we uploaded our Padlets today! We look forward to broadening and developing these wonderings with our students this week.

We are really excited to finally have Cross Country - held on Friday 8th June. The postponement day, should weather become an issue, will be on Thursday, June 21st. Students are not to bring devices on this day. Please find more information attached below.

Interschool Cross Country will be held in Week 7. Just in case the weather does not play it’s part on Friday, we are holding pre-cross country practices at school over the next 2 days (Tuesday and Wednesday) with Haepapa Pod. Names for our top runners will be taken and used to determine Inter School Cross Country participants if we are not able to run this Friday. As we will be running on the track, please ensure students have suitable footwear as they will not be able to run without shoes.

Pae Tamariki is fast approaching! Our tamariki have been working super hard on their performances and they are looking and sounding amazing! Our groups will be performing on Friday 15th June - with our tēina group performing first up at 9am and our tuākana group at 10:40am. If your child is a part of Kapa Haka but is not intending on taking part in Pae Tamariki, please let their Hapu teacher know asap. A letter with further information and details is attached below.

School photo information and order forms will be coming home tomorrow. School Photos will be held on Wednesday 20th June. All photo orders are due back by Friday 15th June. Note that this year there are no classroom photos - only POD photos.

Online orders for the next PTA lunch are now open through Kindo. You can purchase 2 slices of pizzas for $3. Orders close 12 noon on Monday 11th June.

There is no assembly this week due to Cross Country. CRE is still on as we are not leaving for Cross Country until after 10am.

On the subject of clothing, during these colder and wetter months we do still like to have our tamariki out and about as much as possible. We ask those students who like to get out on the fields to bring a spare change of clothes to ensure they don’t end up wet and uncomfortable for the afternoon sessions.
Homework continues to be the Chapter Chat independent tasks. We are loving seeing the creative work that our tamariki are bringing in!

Kahurangi Pouako
