Super 6 Champions 2018

Sunday 28 October 2018

Kia Ora whānau rāua tamariki,

Firstly, a big thank you to all of those who made Ag Day such a success this year. Many people commented on not only the fabulous rural inspired jars, but also the unique and creative home tasks on display. Ka Rawe (excellent) tamariki! And ka pai to the whānau that supported their tāmaiti (child) at home to complete these tasks. Another big thanks to the PTA for all their mahi (work) and those who helped with the judging - no easy task, and at the end of the day we were all winners!

A HUGE congratulations to those who participated in the Super 6 competition this week - awesome results in all sports. A tough draw for our Basketball team who showed grit and determination throughout the day. Our netball team fought hard and took out second place while our Rugby and Football teams both put on exceptional shows and took out first place in their categories. This meant we convincingly took out first place overall! And while we are super proud of their achievements - we all agreed that our favourite moments from the day were seeing how our teams supported each other and celebrated the success of others. True Whakarongo Kids in action.Tu Meke Koutou! If anybody still has uniforms at home, can you please make sure these are washed and returned to Pou Karl ASAP. We also noticed some whānau taking pics on the day - if anybody has some fabulous action shots, team shots or group shots - please send them through! We would love to share them with our Tamariki.

Tomorrow is the final Whānau Hui for 2018 and will be held in Aroha POD from 5:30-6:30pm. This is a chance for our kura (school) and whānau to build relationships and create a shared vision to preserve our culture and support all of our Māori learners. Letters have been sent home with students, and details are available in the school newsletter for those wanting to attend.

We continue to train regularly for School Athletics Day which will be held on Tuesday of week 4. We are still looking for parents to support our pouako and tamariki on the day. Please contact Ms Matangi if you are able to help out - your support is much appreciated! Essential information and organisation of the day is attached below, along with a letter regarding parent help. A wee reminder also that students should be coming to school on a Monday and Wednesday prepared for training with appropriate footwear (closed toe shoes for Discus and Shotput are essential).

On Wednesday our Year 5 ākonga (learners) will be taking part in a study around how Mathematics and Science is taught in schools. All parents of Year 5 students should have received information outlining any essential information in regards to this. If you have any questions, please contact your tamaiti’s (child’s) hapu pouako (homeroom teacher).

With Ag Day over, our focus shifts to our Conceptual Curriculum topic ‘The Canvas for Change’. This is a chance to explore how we can use the arts to convey a message. This week students will look at a range of topics and art forms for communicating their ideas. We hope they will share some of their thoughts with you at home! Please take this opportunity to discuss the big ideas of Poverty in NZ, Refugees in NZ and the Impact of our Digital World with your Tamariki.

CRE and Assembly will resume this week. In addition to these conversations, those wishing to complete homework can find basic facts and spelling on the Blog, along with Chapter Chat activities.

Kia pai tō koutou rā (Have a nice day),
Kahurangi Pouako
