Kia Ora whānau rāua tamariki,

Wow - this term is just racing by and this week is set to be another busy one. It’s fantastic to see our students still so engaged in their learning, putting in the mahi right up until the end and doing an amazing job of it!

This week the big ones are…

Prizegiving will take place this evening! Students need to wear school uniform and will be seated with their PODs at the front of the theatre. All students need to be seated by 6:50pm so we can start on time. Normally prizegiving will be done by 8:30pm.

Kapa Haka performers will need to meet at the back of the Regent at 6:15pm. We are hoping to have a little run through in our changing rooms at 6:30 pm with the prizegiving starting at 7:00pm. Students will have their kapa haka uniforms with them, if possible could they please come in them and remember to bring their school uniform to change into afterwards. Some students will have the blue borrowed uniforms that need to be pinned at the back, if this can't be done then Mr Hobbs will have safety pins with him.

Prizegiving is an opportunity to acknowledge student achievements throughout the year and showcase the talents of the performers. However, please be aware that not everyone can be recognised for their wonderful efforts and achievements. As a pod, we only present 7 certificates to students. Therefore, although we congratulate those who do receive certificates or are chosen to represent the student council, our students should all be proud of their efforts and contributions this year.

This week for our Canvas for Change Conceptual Curriculum unit we will be further exploring how we can convey a message using the arts. We have looked at various social issues over the past few weeks, and have explored different art forms that we may like to use this week. We can’t wait to see what creative ideas our ākonga come up with! It would be a great opportunity this week for whānau to talk with their tamaiti (child) about their ideas so they can bounce ideas around!

Inter school athletics will take place this Wednesday. We wish those taking part all the best - we know you will do amazing! Thanks to those parents who have been able to offer assistance and transport on the day. Those participating please make sure you are here by 8:45am. Uniforms need to be washed after the event and returned ASAP to allow them to be accounted for and organised before the end of the year.

This week will be the final CRE for the year.

As always, there are basic facts and spelling on blog for those who would like to extend themselves at home. Chapter Chat activities for Gangsta Granny are also available on the Kahurangi Blog. We have been receiving some wonderful work that we are proudly showcasing in our pod!

Ngā Mihi,
Kahurangi Pouako

Kia Ora whānau rāua tamariki,

What a busy week we had last week! Ka pai to all of our students who showed kaha (courage), wairua (spirit) and panekiretanga (excellence) at our Kahurangi assembly. We were really proud of our pod and the sharing of their learning. It was great to see those of you who could make it supporting our tamariki and our Kapa Haka rōpu teina as they led the waiata.

Thank you to everyone for being so accommodating last week during the industrial action, we know this a disruption for all involved and appreciate your understanding.

Well done to the students who presented their speeches to their houses today. The speeches were well practised and presented with confidence and it’s amazing to see so many young leaders within our senior school. The successful candidates for the student council representative will be announced at prize giving.

It is that time of year again when we farewell our Year 8 students and celebrate our tamariki’s achievements!! Whakarongo School prizegiving will be held at the Regent on Broadway, Monday 26th November at 7pm. A reminder that students need to be proudly representing Whakarongo School in neat and tidy, correct school uniform. More details around drop off and pick up times will be sent out later this week.

Inter-school athletics will take place on Wednesday 28th November (This is the CORRECT date as it has previously been advertised for Thursday 29th). We wish those participating at the inter-school athletics the best of luck!

Our homework task this week will be to choose from the Chapter Chat activities for Gangsta Granny. As always, basic facts and spelling can be found on the blog, and we encourage all students to read for 20 minutes every night.

Kia pai tō koutou rā (Have a nice day),

Kia Ora whānau rāua tamariki,

What a busy week we had last week! Ka Pai to all of our students who showed wairua (spirit and determination) on Athletics Day. We were impressed with both the performance of our students and the tautoko (support) they gave each other throughout the day.

It was also great to see so many of our tamariki supporting the PTA and attending the School Disco on Friday - a lot of rekareka (fun) was had! Check out the video on Seesaw of our groovy moves!

A reminder that tomorrow the school will be closed for instruction due to industrial action in the form of a day strike.

This week we will be carrying out PAT testing.

The Education Review Office are visiting our kura (school) this week. We look forward to sharing all the wonderful learning of our ākonga with the ERO team.

Inter-school athletics will take place on Wednesday 28th November. Those taking part in this event will have received notices today. Please ensure permission slips for those students are returned before this Friday, 16th November.

Orders for the Year 7 & 8 Jackets must be to the school office by this Friday, 16th November. The jersey is blue and read, and has a zip front as shown below.

Kahurangi will be hosting Assembly this week. We would love to see you there to celebrate the learning of our ākonga this term. We will also have our Kapa Haka rōpu teina (year 5 group) leading us in some waiata which is always amazing to see.

After a busy week last week, we have had some tamariki express an interest in completing last week’s homework task this week. Due to this, our homework task will continue to be around vocabulary building for our Canvas for Change unit. Please find this attached below and on the blog. As always, basic facts and spelling can be found on the blog, and we encourage all students to read for 20 minutes every night.

Kia Ora whānau rāua tamariki,

Only one sleep to go until we put all our hard mahi (work) into practice for our School Athletics Day. A few reminders below to ensure the day goes smoothly - it’s always a fabulous day out supporting our tāmariki outside of the classroom. As always, we would love to see you there if you are able to make it.
Junior Athletics will be held this Wednesday at school. Some of our Kahurangi students have been asked to support our juniors around their rotations - a great opportunity to showcase their leadership skills as tuakana (elder students) to our teina (younger students). Student Helpers are welcome to wear their sports uniforms and house colours on this day.

The PTA will be holding a School Disco this Friday, 9th November. We know many of our students love the opportunity to get together outside of the classroom and we hope to see them there! The Senior Disco runs from 7:30 - 9pm. Entry cost is $5 and this includes pizza and a drink. The $1 shop will also be open and selling glow sticks and small bags of sweets.

Industrial action in form of a day strike is planned for Tuesday 13th November. The school will be closed for instruction as many of our staff will be supporting events around the region to raise awareness for the kua tae te wā (it’s time) campaign. If you are unable to keep your child at school this day, please contact the school office so they can make arrangements by Friday 9th November.

Orders for the Year 7 & 8 Jackets are now open. Orders must be to the school office by Friday 16th November. The jersey is blue and read, and has a zip front as shown below.

For those of you who would like to attend and support our students who participated in the Super 6 competition, certificates will be awarded at Assembly this week.

This week’s homework is designed to support our students with their current focus for our Canvas for Change conceptual curriculum focus. Please find this attached below and on the blog. As always, basic facts and spelling can be found on the blog, and we encourage all students to read for 20 minutes every night.
