Rātaka ō te wiki - Wiki Toru

Kia Ora whānau rāua tamariki,

It’s always fabulous to start off our newsletter celebrating some student achievements. Congratulations to Ava Brock and Adiel Ngirazi who competed in the Manawatu Science Fair this weekend. Both received awards in the Fonterra Science and Technology Junior Category with Ava receiving a highly commended for her project on rabbit water consumption, and Adiel placing 3rd for his project on Plastic Wrap Polymer! Ka mau te wehi kōrua!

Mathex competition will take place this Friday, 10th August, at the Racecourse. Please note that both those year 5 and 6 students need to be at school by 8:15 am so they are ready to leave at 8:30 am. Year 6 teams will compete at 9am. Year 5 team will compete at 10am (but will leave at 8:30am to to watch our year 6 team compete).

At the end of last term we started tuakana teina sessions with our Poutama buddies. This term we have extended this to include time with Toa Pod also. It is a great opportunity for our students to show whanaungatanga (kinship / relationships) and build a sense of belonging for all students in our school community. We hope you will enjoy seeing seesaw posts about the shared learning experiences of our tamariki (children).

This week we continue our Badminton Skills sessions on Wednesday - it is fantastic to see our students build their skills and confidence in both badminton and tennis. Wednesday is fast becoming a favourite day with our ākonga - as well as the pouako!

With the weather still a bit hit or miss, we ask those students who are keen to get out for a kick around (when the fields are open) to bring a spare change of clothes. We love to see our ākonga enjoying the fresh air - but it can sometimes result in muddy and uncomfortable afternoons!

Aroha are running our Whakarongo School Assembly this week. Assembly starts at 2:15pm in the hall.

Crazy Hair Day is to be held on this Thursday, 9th August. It is great to hear our tamariki getting into the spirit of things and planning some outrageous hair do’s! We will be collecting gold coin donations to support KidsCan on this day if you would like to contribute to a great cause.

This week the homework is set to support our Conceptual Curriculum focus for the week of ‘technological advances - why and how is technology changing’.This could be a fun activity to look at with your tamaiti (child) and get creative with! Please find this on the blog.

For those students who would like extra homework, there is basic facts and spelling homework available on the blog for students to access, alongside with Chapter Chat activities.

Ngā Mihi,
Kahurangi Pouako
